For Fillies, Two Years Old

Five and One-Half Furlongs - Main Track

Sunday, August 3, 2003   Race 8

Track: Fast      Turf: Soft

Standswithafist set a clear fast pace off the rail (22.39 & 44.91), lost a bit of ground entering the stretch then drifted outward, under left hand urging from jockey Victor Carrero, brushing Fashion Girl while dueling through late stretch and held on. Fashion Girl rated just off the pace toward the outside, started her drive five wide on the turn, sustained a hard drive through the stretch, was brushed outward in a late duel and gaining every stride. Fashion Girl jockey Joe Bravo lodged an objection against the winning rider for interference through the stretch drive which the stewards allowed taking Standswithafist from first and placed her second as Fashion Girl was awarded the win in The $60,000 Colleen Stakes. Whirlwind Charlott showed no speed early while off the rail, angled out making her bid leaving the quarter pole and closed steadily to late stretch for the third spot. Fashion Girl is a two-year-old gray/roan filly owned by Overbrook Farm, trained by D. Wayne Lukas and was ridden by Joe Bravo.

A Handicap For Three-Year-Olds

One and One-Eighth Miles - Main Track

Sunday, August 3, 2003      Race 11

Track: Fast                Turf: Soft

Finish Wire:

Peace Rule established the clear lead making the run into the first turn getting the opening quarter mile in 23.29.  Excessivepleasure, after bobbling leaving the gate, hurried up into second a length a one-half behind the leader as it was another head back to Wild And Wicked in third.  As the field made its way through the first turn Peace Rules bounded along on an uncontested lead of a length and one-half getting the opening half mile in 47.06 as jockey Edgar Prado had the leader well in hand.  Excessivepleasure continued on in second as Wild And Wicked continued in third.  Sky Mesa and posttime favorite Funny Cide were rating off the lead.  Down the backside, the leader remained Peace Rules maintaining his lead over Excessivepleasure as Sky Mesa had moved into third position, Wild And Wicked ran in fourth as Funny Cide started to look vulnerable still running if fifth position.  Through the far turn and into the stretch Peace Rules set sail for home with a three length lead as Sky Mesa chased the leader hopelessly in second as it was still another three lengths back to Funny Cide who was trying to find the right gear as the field moved through deep stretch.  At the wire, Peace Rules had wired the field, holding off a strong willed Sky Mesa by a length and three-quarters in a final time of 1:49.32 to win The Grade I $1,000,000 Haskell Invitational.  Sky Mesa finished well in the lane to earn the place position as Funny Cide ran outside into the lane and offered a mild bid for show.  Peace Rules is a three-year-old chestnut colt owned by Edmund A.
