The field had a good start as Hal’s Hope was aggressively ridden by Roger Velez to establish the lead as the field moved into the first turn.  Thistyranthasclass was content to sit two lengths off the leader while Rize was another head back in third position.  Hal’s Hope ran the quarter in 23:2.  Down the backside Hal’s Hope continued his lead as Thistyranthasclass and Rize were still tracking second and third as the leaders were now moving into the far turn.  Hal’s Hope managed three-quarters in 1:11:0 as Thistyranthasclass was now gearing up for his final move through the lane.  On the far outside Sea Of Tranquility was making his move and passed the leaders at the head of the stretch.  Thistyranthasclass tried to battle back but was now dropping back as Hal’s Hope was desperately trying to find something in reserve for the stretch drive.  In deep stretch Sea of Tranquility opened up by a length and a half to win The Salvatore Mile Handicap in a time of 1:36:3.  Knock Again, who was never far back, closed well for second as Hal’s Hope held on for third.  Sea Of Tranquility is a five year old horse owned by Triple M. Finish Wire:

Mercenary took the lead at the half-mile marker in a time of 46:4 as Cozy Dance was a head back in second while Spruce Run rated in third position.  The field moved in a big pack down the backside.  As the field made its way through the turn Mercenary continued to lead as Spruce Run cut into the lead and only trailed by a head.  Cozy Dance contested the pace through the far turn but was now starting to weaken dropping to third position.  As the field entered the stretch it was still anybody’s race as the entire field was only separated by six lengths.  Spruce Run ultimately overtook Mercenary, after Mercenary’s game front running effort, and held on through the stretch for a half-length win in The Restoration Stakes.  One Eyed Joker, who rated off the pace early on, made his way through traffic on the far turn before getting blocked at the quarter pole but still managed to rally for second.  Punkin Head also rated well off the pace early on and made his way through horses in the far turn but leveled off in deep stretch running third.  Spruce Run is a three-year-old colt owned by Golden Dome Stable, trained by Linda Rice and was ridden by Jose C. Key Lory cleared the field after a good start and led the field through an opening half-mile in 46:3.  Lightning Paces, ran a length back in second as Runspastum was another length back in third position.  The entire field was separated by about eleven lengths down the backstretch.  As the field entered the far turn Lightning Paces cut Key Lory’s lead down to a half-length as Runspastum and North East Bound were stalking in third and fourth positions.  Into the stretch Key Lory was holding onto a stubborn one length lead as North East Bound moved past Runspastum into second as Cat Scan and Crash Course were trying to put in their best efforts.  Lightning Paces by now had dropped out of contention.  In deep stretch, North East Bound cut Key Lory’s lead down to a half-length for the second time in the race but Key Lory was able to hold on for a very game front running victory in the Grade III Oceanport Handicap.  North East Bound, who stalked the pace for most of the race, held on for a very good second as Crash Course, who ran off the pace for most of the race, got up for third.   Key Lory is seven-year-old horse owned by Mack Fehsenfeld, trained by Dennis J. A Handicap For Three-Year-Olds

One And One-Eighth Miles

Sunday, August 5, 2001        Race 11

Main Track - Fast

Finish Wire:

The field was sent off to a good start as Touch Tone and Hero’s Tribute tried to establish the early lead.  Touch Tone ran the opening quarter in 22:3 as Hero’s Tribute sat a head-length back in second.  It was another five lengths back to Burning Roma.  Betting favorite Point Given was off the pace early on and settled on the outside.  As the field moved down the backside Touch Tone opened up a one and one-half  length lead over Hero’s Tribute as Burning Roma still ran third.  Two thirds of the way down the backside Point Given made a big move and made up six lengths on the leaders as the field entered the far turn.  In the turn, Touch Tone and Hero’s Tribute rebuffed the move of Point Given and spurted away from the favorite by more than a length as Touch Tone ran three-quarters in 1:11:1.  Coming out of the turn Touch Tone was on the rail followed by  Hero’s Tribute and Point Given, who coming out of the turn was running well off the rail in the four path.  In mid-stretch Touch Tone was proving to be resilient on the lead as Point Given was now fully extended and started to lug in at the eighth pole.  Meanwhile, Burning Roma had passed Hero’s Tribute, who weakened and fell back, and was now driving between the two front runners as the three battle to the wire.  At the wire, Point Given wrangled the lead from a very game Touch Tone, and held on to win the Grade I Haskell Invitational by a half-length.  Touch Tone, who almost pulled off a front running masterpiece, ran a game second as Burning Roma also ran gamely for third.  Point Given covered the one and one-eighth mile distance in 1:49:3.  Point Given is a three-year-old colt owned by The Thoroughbred Corporation, trained by Bob Baffert and was ridden by Gary Stevens.
