$50,000 For Fillies, Three Years Old Five Furlongs - Haskell Turf Course Saturday, July 27, 2002 Race 8 Main Track: Fast Turf Course: Firm Finish Wire: After a good start for the entire field Melody Of Colors led the field through a snappy opening quarter in 21.35. Tangier Sound sat a length off the leader as Mooji Moo was hustled out of the outside post to secure the third spot. Through the turn Melody of Colors continued to lead Tangier Sound by a length as Mooji Moo bolted in the turn and lost all chance. Libby's Halo was saving ground and moved into third as the field moved into the stretch. Through the lane Melody of Colors continued to lead but Tangier Sound was starting to gain on the outside as the two drove toward the wire. At the wire, Tangier Sound got up by a head to win The Candy Eclair Stakes in a final time of 56.43. Melody of Colors after dueling gamely had to settle for second as Libby's Halo finished third. Tangier Sound is a three-year-old bay filly owned by Conover Stable, trained by James T. Ryerson and was ridden by Julian Pimentel. |

Grade III (55th Running) $100,000 A Handicap For Three-Year-Olds And Upward One Mile - Main Track Saturday, July 27, 2002 Race 9 Main Track: Fast Turf Course: Firm Finish Wire: The field was sent off to a good start except for Tempest Fugit, who bobbled at the start, and Express Tour, who broke a bit slowly. Into the first turn Firm Believer took the early lead and led the field through an opening quarter in 23.21 as Express Tour was rushed into contention after the slow start and ran a head back in second. Cat's At Home was another length and one-half back in third as the field made its way onto the backstretch. Down the backside, Express Tour continued to vie for the lead with Firm Believer as the two were neck and neck as Express Tour ran the half in 45.79. Cat's At Home still sat in third position a length and one-half off the leaders. Free Of Love moved into fourth position as the field made its way through the far turn. In the far turn Cat's At Home moved wide and took the lead from Express Tour, who was starting to weaken. Free of Love was now running in third position as the field made its way into the stretch. In deep stretch, Cat's At Home maintained a head length lead as Express Tour could not gain any ground in second. First Lieutenant continued gaining ground in third while Free of Love was now fourth as Sea of Tranquility was gearing up in fifth position. At the wire, First Lieutenant had passed Cat's At Home and drew off for a one and one-half length win as Sea of Tranquility ran second while Free of Love finished another neck back in third. Before the race was official a stewards inquiry and an objection was lodged by jockey Chuck C. Lopez (Free of Love) against Carlos Cruz (First Lieutenant) for stretch run interference and the winner was taken down and placed third. Sea of Tranquility was placed first while Free of Love was moved up to second as First Lieutenant was placed third. Sea of Tranquility, defending his Salvatore Mile title, is a six-year-old chestnut horse owned by Triple M Farm, Inc., trained by Richard E. Paulus and was ridden by Jose C. Ferrer. |

$50,000 For Fillies and Mares, Three Years Old And Upward Five Furlongs - Haskell Turf Course Sunday, July 28, 2002 Race 9 Main Track: Fast Turf Course: Firm Finish Wire: The field broke well as Amber's Way led the field through the opening quarter in a crisp 21.12 a half-length in front of Naughty Mambo and No Other Name. At the three-eighths marker Amber's Way had lengthened his lead to a length and one-half as Naughty Mambo still led No Other Name by a neck but neither could make any dent in the lead of the frontrunner. Amber's Way drilled the half-mile in a quick 43.78 and opened up by a full two lengths. Cloud City moved into second position as To Marquet was lacking a closing kick running in third position. At the wire, Amber's Way won the Klassy Briefcase Stakes by one length over Slewgenes. who rallied well for second, in a time of 55.92. Cloud City hung on for third position. Amber's Way is a four-year-old dark bay/brown filly owned by Richard L. Gelb, trained by John R. S. Fisher and was ridden by Carlos Cruz. |
