Royal Affirmed took to the lead after the start and led the field every step of the way to deep stretch before drifting out slightly in the stretch giving the lead to Gulch Approval who drew off in deep stretch to win the First Division of The Elkwood Stakes by a length and three-quarters in a final time if 1:43.39.  Royal Affirmed earned second in a front running effort as Stormy Ray closed for the show spot.  Gulch Approval is a four-year-old dark bay/brown gelding owned by Marylou Whitney Stables, trained by Nicholas P. Zito and was ridden by Chuck Lopez.

Finish Wire:

Spruce Run took the lead as the field moved passed the six furlong marker in a time of 1:13.00 as American Freedom was a head back in second and Miesque’s Approval ran third.  The entire field from front to back was less than three-lengths apart.  In the stretch Spruce Run dug in as he was pressured entering the stretch, made light contact with American Freedom approaching the eighth pole and dug in determinedly to hold on for a hard fought neck victory in the Second Division of The Elkwood Stakes in a final time of 1:43.90.  Stormy Roman remained boxed in through the upper stretch, rallied leaving the false rail, looked a factor in late stretch but needed more while finishing well for the place spot as First Lieutenant was up for show.  Spruce Run is a six-year-old chestnut horse owned by Golden Dome Stable, trained by Linda Rice and was ridden by Joe Bravo.

Finish Wire:

Choose led the field through the opening half-mile a half length in front of My Snookie’s Boy and betting favorite Lion Heart.  In the far turn Lion Heart content to prompt the early issue outside foes, moved to the front three deep in the vicinity of the three-eighths pole, battled heads apart with My Snookie’s Boy in the stretch and then narrowly prevailed by a head, after a long drive, to win The Long Branch Breeders’ Cup Stakes in a final time of 1:43.51. My Snookie’s Boy ran a game second, as Royal Assault was another five and one-half lengths back in third.  Lion Heart is a three-year-old chestnut colt owned by Derrick Smith and Michael Tabor, trained by Patrick L. Biancone and was ridden by Joe Bravo.

Sheyar Special broke and cleared the field down the backside taking a two and half-length lead through the turn getting the half-mile in 44.57.  Something Smith rated just off the leader in second as Dixie Two Thousand was running in third position.  In the stretch, Sheryar Special weakened nearing the eighth pole and gave way to Something Smith who drew off by three lengths to win the Bernie Dowd Handicap in a final time of 1:09.83.  Dixie Two Thousand finished well for second as Trueamericanspirit closed on the outside for show.  Something Smith is a four-year-old chestnut colt owned by Gerald F. Sleeter, trained by Kevin G. Sleeter and was ridden by Chuck Lopez.

After the break Whoop’s Ah Daisy went to the front and led the field through an opening quarter in 22.45 and a the half-mile in 45.45 as Distinctive Kitten pressed the leader a half-length back in second while Elegant Designer ran another half-length back in third.  In the stretch, Whoop’s Ah Daisy extended her lead to two lengths before getting beat at the wire by a fast closing Final Round who closed from the outside to earn a half-length victory in The Red Cross Stakes in a final time of 1:10.19.  Whoop’s Ah Daisy ran a game second after setting the early pace while Cupid Season was third.  Final Round is a four-year-old bay filly owned by G. Watts Humphrey, Jr., trained by George R. Arnold, II, and was ridden by Chris DeCarlo.

 

Final Round wins The $65,000 Red Cross Stakes with Chris DeCarlo in the irons.

Terrified Ice led Uphill Skier by a head as the field went by the quarter marker in 23.02 and then the half mile pole in 46.43.  It was another length and a half back to Eastern Gale in third and Willie’s Luv in fourth. Uphill Skier then took the lead in the turn getting three quarters in 1:11.54 before opening up keeping to steady stretch encouragement winning the Spruce Fir Handicap by three and one-quarter lengths in a final time of 1:38.50.  Smart N Classy came through the final turn in the four path then dueled late for place, while Eastern Gale picked up the chase on the final turn then was outfinished off the rail for place. Uphill Skier is a four-year-old bay filly owned by  New Farm, trained by Ben W. Perkins, Jr., and was ridden by Stewart Elliott.

Schedule led the field through the opening mile in fractions of 22.33, 45.65, 1:10.16, 1:36.74 before yielding late to Susan’s Angel who reached the pacesetter in midstretch then finished gamely to prevail by a head at the wire for the win in The Serena’s Song Handicap in final time of 1:41.14.  Schedule ran gamely on the front end getting second as Taittinger Rose advanced nearing the top of the lane then finished well from the outside to get third.  Susan’s Angel is a three-year-old dark bay/brown filly owned by Finney Creek Stable, trained by D. Wayne Lukas and was ridden by Eibar Coa.

Quick Action is a three-year-old bay colt owned by Overbrook Farm, trained by D. Wayne Lukas and was ridden by Eibar Coa.

Presidentialaffair went to the lead after the start and was allowed a three-length lead passing the half mile pole in 46.26 as Unforgettable Max took up the chase in second while Crafty Shaw was looking for better form in third.  Presidentialaffair continued on the lead through the far turn as Unforgettable Max made his move on the outside getting within a half length as the field entered the stretch.  Through the lane Presidentialaffair persevered responsively with steady encouragement to the wire to beat Unforgettable Max by a length to win The Salvator Mile Handicap in a final time of 1:35.27.  Unforgettable Max drifted out losing a bit of momentum under a left hand drive in the stretch but recovered well to come back toward the wire to get second as Roaring Fever finished third.  Presidentialaffair is a five-year-old bay gelding owned by V. Papandrea & E. Ciresa, trained by Martin E. Ciresa and was ridden by Stewart Elliott.
