The saying is, "If you build it they will come."  And that is just what the Monmouth Park management did for the 2003 renewal of The Grade I Haskell Invitational as a record crowd of over 50,000 racing fans came out to the shore oval to see Kentucky Derby winner, Funny Cide, take on a very good field including the Bobby Frankel trainee, Peace Rules.  Click the link below to read the recap of the Haskell.

Opening weekend at the shore oval was anything but an average weekend as far as the weather was concerned.  124 horses were originally scheduled to run on the opening day card but scratches shortened many of the fields limiting the betting choices and in some cases causing graded events to lose their graded status.  Above, Happy Trails, ridden by Abdiel Toribio, draws off to win The $100,000 Jersey Derby, the featured race on Monday's Memorial Day card.

The fourth straight weekend racing has been taken off the grass as the rain and moisture continues to hamper races on the weeds.  The main track was just fine for Julian Pimentel, however, as the young jockey booted home both ends of Saturday's co-features.  First he guided Live Oak Plantation's, Slews Final Answer, to victory in The West Long Branch Stakes (Above), and then in The Oceanport Handicap, the tenth race, he rode Runspastum to victory for Jayeff B. Stables and Alan Goldberg, beating the likes of Balto Star and Burning Roma.  See the Stakes Schedule below for more racing action.

Michael Tabor's Zavata preps for his next start at Calder's Summit of Speed by drilling six furlongs in 1:08 4/5, over a main track listed as fast, winning Thursday's eighth race.  Regular rider Tony Farina was aboard as the three-year-old son of Phone Trick made his first start since March of this year.
