Belmont Park was once again the host of yet another
Breeder's Cup card. Their fourth Breeders' Cup to be exact and the
fifth New York has hosted in total. The weather was blistery
hovering in the low 50's
which felt more like the mid 20's without the sun. The card itself
was void of some of the years superstars but was competitive in every race
while Horse of The Year honors would also be hanging in the balance.
A win for Lost In The Fog in the Sprint, or Saint Liam in the Classic,
could have nailed down the honors for either camp. If both should
fail Afleet Alex, who was in the barn recovering from injury, could lock
up the honor after his legendary spring campaign. Rock Hard Ten was
also in with a chance but was a late scratch due to injury. NBC was
on hand for their annual coverage of the event. And quite honestly
since it was their final time covering the event let's call their telecast
for what it was. A classic case of going through the motions.
Their complete non-promotion of this event and the NTRA's inability to
produce anything but cookie-cutter commercials with bad slogans and the
all too familiar "insert generic track information here" style is the
reason why this event does poorly in the ratings. How can so many
marketing minds not be able to figure this out. Quite frankly ESPN
is more equipped to do this telecast and they will have it next year.
Let's just hope they promote it. The telecast did have a few
interesting pieces such as the one about the well documented troubles of
jockey Garret Gomez as well as the behind the scenes Lost In The Fog story
which was interesting. It was fitting that Gomez would go on to have
a career day. Perhaps the biggest piece of news covered this
day by NBC would be that Charlsie Cantey, longtime racing analyst, would
be retiring from the microphone. This is disappointing since she is
one of the more knowledgeable analysts in the game. As for the racing we would see a pretty even race track as far any bias was concerned and there were no walk-over's in well matched fields the entire afternoon. While there were some pretty solid favorites, they would only reach the winners circle twice on this day. The Monmouth Park angle continued to prove that racing from the shore oval produces its share of good runners. The following is a list of thoroughbreds that ran on Breeders' Cup day that also ran at Monmouth Park in 2005/2004:

Nearing the wire Pleasant Home would run away and hide win the Breeders' Cup Distaff by nine and one-quarter widening lengths under steady encouragement from her pilot stopping the tele-timer in 1:48.34 for the one turn mile and one-eighth distance. As the two dueled through the lane they would take enough out of each other to set up Stevie Wonderboy for the victory as he picked his way through the field after being as far back as eleventh place at the half-mile call. Henny Hughes would keep Stevie Wonderboy honest through the stretch as he would win The Breeders' Cup Juvenile by a length and one-quarter in a final time of 1:41.64.
