Churchill Downs was yet again the site for another great day in Breeders' Cup History.  This years Breeders' Cup was influenced a great deal by horses who ran this past summer at Monmouth Park.  Starting on the undercard in the Churchill Downs Distaff Handicap, Chilukki, winner of Monmouth Park's  Regret Stakes, and Reciclada, winner of Monmouth Park's Eatontown Stakes ran first and second in a blistering time of 1:33:2.  Monmouth Breeders' Cup Oaks winner Spain shocked the crowd by winning the Breeders' Cup Distaff over a tough field including Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup Handicap winner Lu Ravi who finished fifth.

The Breeders' Cup Mile was also an epic as multiple stakes winner at Monmouth and winner of this years Meadowlands Cup, North East Bound, ran a credible second in the Breeders' Cup Mile in one of the most exciting races on the card.  In the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf event Monmouth's 1999 Captive Miss Stakes winner, Perfect Sting, won in impressive fashion giving Stronach Stables one-half of their winning double on Breeders' Cup day.  And finally, Haskell Invitational runner-up Captain Steve, from the barn of Bob Baffert, ran a respectable third in the 2000 Breeders' Cup Classic.

The following is a look back at Breeder's Cup 2000 with prices and race descriptions including pictures caught through the lens of Oceanport Racing Report's photographer.

One Mile - Turf Course

Turf: Firm

Finish Wire:

From the fourteen post North East Bound cleared the talented field and took the lead entering the clubhouse turn.  North East Bound's jockey, Jose Velez, Jr., was able to rate North East Bound on the lead setting fractions of 23:4, 47:4, 1:11:2 and 1:22:4 as Affirmed Success, Muhtathir and Hap all fell prey to the effortless somewhat hypnotic fractions and lacked running room  as well as foot speed as the field turned for home.  As the field entered the stretch North East Bound looked strong off the moderate early fractions but was caught at the wire by the oncoming War Chant who was driving on the outside to win the Breeders' Cup Mile by a neck on the wire in a time of 1:34:3.  North East Bound after a brilliant race held on for second as Dansili placed third in the photo finish.  War Chant is a three-year-old colt owned by Marjorie and Irving Cowan, trained by Neil D. Drysdale and was ridden by Gary Stevens.
