Shackleford stumbled at the break with
Coil bobbling and off slowly as well. Joe Vann would go to the front
and be pressed by Shackleford through the opening three-quarters in
1:10.68. Concealed Identity and J J’s Lucky Train were third and
fourth as the field entered the stretch. Shackleford was on the lead
by a half length entering the lane as Joe Vann gave way to J J’s Lucky
Train and now a fast closing Coil on the extreme outside after a five
wide move and the slow start. In mid stretch Coil moved past leader Shackleford and drove willingly to the wire. Shackleford
conceded ground to the new leader and then came back on the inside but
was a neck short as Coil went on to win The 2011 Haskell Invitational
in a final time of 1:48.20. Shackleford after the bad break ran a
game second while Ruler On Ice closed well on the rail for third.
Coil is a three-year-old chestnut colt owned by Karl Watson, Michael
E. Pegram and Paul Weitman, trained by Bob Baffert and was ridden by
Martin Garcia.
