The
field was off to a good start as Spruce Run was allowed to take the
lead as he walked the field through pedestrian like fractions of
26.79, 52.72, 1:18.12 over the soft going. Midnight Express was
sitting second for three-quarters of a mile no more than a length back
as Remind was running third. In the stretch Spruce Run was holding on
to a desperate head as American Freedom made a five wide bid to get
along side the leader as the two passed the sixteenth pole. At the
wire American Freedom had gotten there first by a long neck over the
race pacesetter Spruce Run who settled for second a neck in front of
Royal Affirmed who was up for the show spot. American Freedom is a
seven-year-old gray/roan gelding owned by Freedom Acres, Inc., trained
by Jamie Woodington and was ridden by Jose Velez, Jr.
