The Jersey Derby
$100,000

Main Track: Fast
Turf: Good

The field was off in good
order except for Retribution who checked at the break. It didn’t
really much matter as the field let Touched By Madness go to the front
and he got loose on the front-end setting moderate fractions of 23.90,
47.42 and 1:12.33. A host of entrants took turns trying to real in
the leader but at no time was the second place runner ever within two
lengths of Touched By Madness as he went wire to wire to win The
Jersey Derby by two and one-half lengths at the wire covering the one
mile and one-sixteenth distance in a final time of 1:43.54. Spring
House closed stoutly to nose out Hole In The Head for second as the
later ran third. Touched By Madness is a three-year-old bay gelding
owned by Gilbert G. Campbell, trained by Edward T. Allard and was
ridden by Frank Pennington.
