Sunday, August 7, 2005   Race 12

Main Track: Fast    Turf: Firm

Finish Wire:

Sun King left the gate at the break and went immediately to the front to set the tempo through the opening mile in 1:36.77.  Joey P pressed the leader through the opening three-quarters of a mile before tiring as Roman Ruler was sitting another head back in third stalking the leaders as the field made its way through the turn and into the stretch.  In the stretch Roman Ruler pulled alongside Sun King passing the mile marker and dueled with the pace setter before opening up late by a length and a half to win The Haskell Invitational in a final time of 1:49.88.  Sun King ran a game effort to finish second while Park Avenue Ball finished evenly for third.  Roman Ruler is a three-year-old dark bay/ brown colt owned by Fog City Stable, trained by Bob Baffert and was ridden by Jerry D. Bailey.

Roman Ruler, with Jerry Bailey in the irons, wins the 38th Running of The Haskell Invitational.
