Main Track: Fast    Turf: No Turf Racing

Finish Wire:

The field broke to a good start except for Midnight Express who hesitated when the gate opened.  Down the backside War’s Prospect went to the front and led the field through the opening quarter in a swift 21.70, a half length in front of Bold Days and Smokume who were both tracking the leader intently.  War’s Prospect led the field into the turn and was first at the half-mile pole getting the distance in 44.37, still a half length in front of Bold Days and Smokume.  As the field straightened out into the lane Smokume put a head in front of Bold Days as War’s Propsect dropped back into third.  Deep in the lane Smokume edged away passing the sixteenth pole and went on to win the Decathlon Stakes by a length and three-quarters over Vinemeister, who finished well for second and Bold Days who managed third after chasing the pace the entire race.  Smokume is a four-year-old chestnut gelding owned by Hobeau Farm, trained by H. Allen Jerkens and was ridden by Chantal Sutherland.
